Learning to Live

...........an introdution
Part I
Background Philosophy
Sampoerna Academy aims to develop students’ life skills as well as their academic competence. The students must also develop their affective and psychomotor domains to become well-balanced individuals. Normal school days are found inadequate to address such needs because school usually prioritizes academic. Those are the reason why Sampoerna Academy chose boarding education as it can provide more time and space for student to develop the affective and psychomotor domains. With a set of well-deigned activities, boarding education can provide different learning settings and experience from morning to noon study. This is the rationale why Sampoerna Academy created a set of activities called L to L to address such needs.
Learning to live or L to L is a program that gives Sampoerna Academy students experience to learn to be creative and to be responsible and care to their well being and to the society. L to L is not the counterpart of the academic program; it is the academic complement in achieving well-balance students. Student must strive for excellence in both.
In educational word, L to L is not the first of its kind. The world has recognized CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service from International Baccalaurate), PSHE & C (Personal, Social, Health Education, and Citizenship from British Government), and 4H (Head, Hand, Heart, and Health). The three existing programs offer engaging, and highly significant activities for their learners. However, their relevance to the Indonesian norms and cultures is relative. Like any other education program, L to L also strives for the four requirements of learning (engaging, challenging, significant, and relevant). Hence, the activities in L to L must also make sense, and be acceptable or Indonesian students.

Part II
a) L to L Groups

In spite of the differences, like he other programs, L to L are divided into development areas that are distinct to each other. The purpose of the division is to improve the feasibility to monitor the progress of each are. All area has the equal importance and must be developed at the same pace to ensure balance. To address that concern, L to L divides its program into 4 groups and each group consist of several units.

1.    Personal Well Being ( PWB )
The group that provides student experiences on learning to understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle. The coverage is sex education, substance abuse, physical fitness, nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, and psychological well-being. The activities included in this group are all kind of sport, workshop, project,

2.    Creativity and Arts (CA)
Students nourish their aesthetic creativity in C&A. C&A also provides opportunity for students to master motoric and sensory skills. C&A covers performance art, and fine art. Performance art consists of music, theater, and dance. Fine art consist of drawing, painting, architecture, conceptual (sculpture), literature, and gastronomy (cuisine). The activities included in this group are rehearsal, workshop, demonstration, exhibition, show, and project.

3.    Community Service (CS)
This group is also named as service learning. Two terms that serve two purposes perfectly, learn to serve and serve to learn. Student gives contribution to the society in order to help those in needs and to learn authentically about the problems in the society. The goal is to make students grow care to the society, grow creativity in problem solving, and learn to work hard and make changes.
Community service in SA is described as global, collaborative, committed, and respect, it means the target communities range from local to global, the nature of the service is collaborative with the community, student is committed to make changes, and everyone must respect each other.

4.    Global Citizenship (GC)
Education for GC gives children and young people the opportunity to develop critical thinking about complex global issues in the safe school setting (Oxfam, 2006). GC serves the purpose to fight international inequality and to promote peace. GC provides opportunity for student to train their research skills, thinking skill, and communication skills. Students are required to be scientific, to think critically, and to communicate their ideas effectively. The goal is to embody internationalism and open-mindedness in the student.

We are Eagle House

I am Andri. My complete name is Andri Pramono. In SMAN Sumatera Selatan(Sampoerna Academy) I am the ICT teacher.  Besides teaching in class, principal gives me duty to manage and develop ICT at school including network system, management system and give additional skill for student about ICT depend on their daily life. It’s change and challenge for me because every student comes from various region and different culture especially their computer skill and facilities, besides that, this school need a lot of ICT development because the infrastructure is still in progress.
Actually I am only a teacher, but in here I must develop the system and network, I am so glad with this challenge. It makes me develop myself, every people must change to be better and always improve to be better also.
In ICT School Club I give student material about Graphics, because I am an ICT user whose GUI (Graphics User Interface) talent, if talk about TUI (Text User Interface), I am just learning about programming according to the Computer Olympiad topic for our student.

Before I join with Sampoerna Academy, I was in SMAN 2 Sekayu as ICT teacher and ICT team also. I make school web site http://sman2sekayu.sch.id with open source program. I am interested with Open Source Linux, CMS, etc. If we can use legal software without spending our money … why not?! Even though it’s easier to apply the licensed-software. The problem in this country is everyone only knows computer with windows without knowing it’s legal or illegal. So, my hope for our student is using legal software, respect the other creation.

Eagle House Advisor Period 2

I’m Muslich. I’m from Boyolali, Central Java. I was graduated from Post-Graduate Program of the Center for Religious and Cross-Cultural Studies (CRCS) Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta. I’m teaching both Religion and Arabic. I also become the House Master in this amazing school. My whole family; my wife (Maria Ulfah) and my son (Ahmad Hasan Nur)and I stay in dormitory together with the students. It is very grateful to get the chance to share my experiences and knowledge with all of students who come from a diverse background. And yes, I do believe that together we can make it happen!

By using Taxonomy’s Bloom theory, I am teaching both Religion and Arabic for the students begin from the step of remembering – classifying - analysing – and finally creating. I am encouraging the students to dig their understanding comprehensively by avoiding the narrow minded perspective. They will become the an active subject of life and not only a passive object of it. My motto is “كلّف نفسك ولاتدلع”. Thanks to my Lord, thanks to all.
